MARINA’S MONTECITO CITY GUIDE

MARINA’S MONTECITO CITY GUIDE

Founder and Creative Director Marina Cortbawi decided to open our first ever retail boutique in Montecito because the two felt like a match made in heaven: “Merlette’s timeless elegance and Montecito’s serene beauty go hand in hand,” says Marina. “There’s a real community feeling and sense of creativity here that we were excited to tap into.” In honor of the store’s grand opening, Marina takes us through the city’s many treasures, from a wonderland of rare plants to a charming throwback diner.

Lotusland

“If you haven’t been to Lotusland, make this your first stop. This staggeringly beautiful botanical garden and estate is like stepping into another world, with 39 acres of rare tropical plants, lush ferns, succulents, cacti and so much more.”

Miramar Beach Club

“This private social club is a luxurious but laidback oasis right by the ocean. It features a state-of-the-art gym, two pools, an incredible restaurant with Art Deco flair, and an absolutely gorgeous stretch of beach.”

Butterfly Beach

“Because of its unique East-West position on the California coast, you can view both sunsets and sunrises from this mellow beach. It’s perfect for swimming, surfing, or just spreading out a towel and taking in the view.”

Montecito Farmers Market

“I always head to the Montecito Farmers Market when I’m in town—it runs from 8 am until 11:15 am every Friday. The California produce is some of the most diverse and flavorful in the world, and I’m always sure to find something unusual that’s ripe and in season. It’s also a great place to chat with people in the community and connect with local organic farmers.”

Oat Bakery

“Started by a recent transplant from Copenhagen, this beloved bakery has a distinctly Scandinavian influence that’s evident in their delicious ‘hygge buns’ (vegan cinnamon pastries). Their sourdough bread is divine, and they also have an array of offerings if you’re gluten-free, too.”

Stonehouse Restaurant at San Ysidro Ranch

“This is what people dream of when they imagine California living: vibrant, fresh contemporary American cuisine served on the grounds of tranquil San Ysidro Ranch, a historic boutique hotel that has hosted everyone from Groucho Marx to Laurence Olivier to John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy (they honeymooned there!).”

Andrée Clark Bird Refuge

Merci

“Located in the Montecito Country Mart, Merci is my go-to spot for a breakfast meeting or light lunch. The organic salads are delicious, as are the exquisite pastries—Merci’s pastry chef learned her craft at the Ritz Escoffier in Paris.”

Montecito Coffee Shop

“This casual, welcoming spot in the San Ysidro Pharmacy has been around for 40 years, and serves up all the diner classics: delicious scrambles, homemade soups, tacos, burgers and more.”
